Tottenham Hotspur started their pre-season with a lesson from Villarreal at White Hart Lane this week. Guiseppe Rossi, the ex-Man Utd striker scored twice and only a consolation from Giovanni Dos Santos made the score halfway respectable.

Spurs have got a Champions League Qualifier coming up very soon but they will need to improve drastically on this performance to get through to the Group Stages.

The Chelsea and England U21 defender Michael Mancienne is asking Chelsea to allow him to join Wolverhampton Wanderers on a permanent basis after spending the most of the last two years on loan at the club.

Mancienne said: “I’ve been at Chelsea since I was a kid and I’d love to break into the first team, but it’s hard for any young player knowing how much quality they’ve got.

According to reports today, the ex-Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole has made his mind up and plumped for a move to Anfield for the new season.

A report on ESPN said: Liverpool have signed former Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole on a free transfer.

The 28-year-old England international left Stamford Bridge at the end of last season after failing to agree a new contract with the club and has agreed personal terms on a four-year deal at Anfield.

The Chelsea coach Carlo Ancelotti has made it clear that the Blues are not interested in signing Fernando Torres from Liverpool, as Chelsea already have four first-team strikers.

It appears that Chelsea have made enquiries about the Brazilian international midfielder Ramires, who is currently playing for Benfica in Portugal.

Ramires’ agent, Luis Carlini, has reported that Chelsea have actually spoken to Benfica about a possible move.

“Many clubs from the big European leagues have been in contact about Ramires,” Carlini said.

“Chelsea and Bayern have spoken to Benfica, but I can’t say more.”
