The European Club Association awards were held yesterday and Chelsea were given the award for the best club in Europe last season. They beat clubs like Real Madrid, Barcelona, Man City, Juventus and Athletico Madrid because of their combined successes in Europe and in England.
It is the latest gold star on the resume of the Italian manager and former Chelsea player Roberto Di Matteo. The award has got extra value because it is voted by other clubs who have recognised the outstanding achievement of the team.
The FA cup is still seen as the most prestigious domestic competition in Europe, because of the way it is set up, the fierce competitive nature of it and the history.
It is surely the dramatic way that Chelsea captured their first ever European title that swayed the vote in their favour. Beating Barcelona, who many see as the best club team ever, in the way they did in the semi-finals after having John Terry sent off in the second leg captured people’s sense of what football is all about.
The final against Munich on their own turf was equally memorable and will stick in the minds of football fans everywhere for years to come. We won’t make it such a close run thing this year and could add the league title as well, just to make it easier for the voters in a year’s time.
