As the departure of Atletico’s striker Antoine Griezmann becomes more of a reality than speculation and rumour, in anticipation, the club are already lining up Tottenham hotspurs forward, 21 year-old Argentine Erik Lamela as his first-choice replacement.
Chelsea are keen on getting Atletico’s forward Griezmann, as Mourinho wants to replace ageing Drogba and injury-prone Remy. Although the Rojiblancos aren’t willing to let him go as there are plans to skyrocket his buyout clause for the 2nd time, but the involvement of Portuguese agent, Jorge Mendes has made things turn around. Hence, Atletico are ready to look elsewhere for a competent forward, and the Tottenham striker tops the list.
Erik Lamela has struggled to find form in the EPL since arriving at the White Hart Lane 2 seasons ago from Italian side, AS Roma. And even fellow Argentine and coach, Mauricio Pochettino’s arrival couldn’t help him rediscover the great form he had while at Serie A that made him become adjudged as one of South America’s biggest talents. Though the player, who holds the highest transfer record in Tottenham, following his 30 million pound-transfer, has played in 29 league matches this season with 2 goals, that is still far from expectations. His last season with Roma produced 33 appearances and 15 goals. Hence it can be said that the winger cum midfielder is a shadow of his former self.
But Atletico Madrid are signing him just for a reason – Diego Simeone. The Argentine handler was once his coach at their home side, River Plate. And he believes a reunion with his one-time prodigy, who he once tried to sign at Atletico, will rekindle the spark he used to have.
Tottenham won’t be letting go of him cheap. The club’s chairman, Daniel Levy has made it clear that only 20 million pounds or nothing else for the player’s signature. With Atletico poised to sell Griezmann, and possibly Koke, affording his fees shouldn’t be issue. La Liga is less physical than the EPL, and that could be what Lamela needs to be great once again.
