It has been reported today that both Chelsea and Liverpool are making overtures to the English-born Werder Bremen striker Aaron Hunt, who is out of contract this summer, so will be available on a Bosman transfer.
The 23 year-old has been approached by the FA to see if he would like to play for England, and it seems that the big English clubs are also keen to bring him back to his homeland.
Hunt has made a fantastic start to the season in the Bundesliga, scoring five goals in his last six games, and with no transfer fee involved will be able to demand massive wages from whoever his new club will be next summer.
Hunt’s agent Karlheinz Forster said yesterday: “There is interest from Germany and abroad, from big clubs, we are not talking about mediocre clubs.”
Werder Bremen have every intention of trying to persuade him to stay but as manager Klaus Allofs said, it will be hard to match the wages on offer at the top European teams. “We will prepare an offer,” he said. “But if there are higher offers from other clubs it could be difficult for us.”
Hunt’s mother is originally from the London area, and he has many relatives down south, so he may prefer to opt for a move to Chelsea, but when he was offered the chance to play for England, he made his own mind up to stick with Germany.
“I feel very honoured and extremely happy that England have expressed an interest in me and even watched me play,’ he said.
“But I am clear in my mind that I want to play for Germany. This is where I have grown up and played all my football, and it seems a logical decision to make.
“It hasn’t gone down well with everyone. There are some members of my family who would like me to play for England, but we have talked it through and they accept my reasons.”
