Chelsea is looking to place a £20million bid on Everton full-back, Seamus Coleman this summer [MailOnline]. The Irish international has impressed on some of the biggest stages this season, and has certainly caught the eye of José Mourinho. With question marks surrounding Filipe Luís’ future in London, Mourinho will have to purchase an extra full-back, in case César Azpilicueta or Branislav Ivanović happens to go down in injury or just need a rest. Coleman would be a wonderful reserve player, and he could possibly be a long term replacement to Ivanović, if he was to retire soon, or leave for Bayern Munich.
Two out of Chelsea’s three full-backs has been seriously linked to a move away from the club, Filipe Luís possibly returning to La Liga to play for his former club Atlético Madrid, or joining Sevilla, or making a move to Inter Milan to play for Roberto Mancini [SportsMediaNet]. On the other hand, Bayern Munich is reportedly ready to make an £11million bid for Branislav Ivanović, who would mull the offer over, despite being happy in London [Bild]. Ivanović’s presence on the right flank would surely be missed, but Filipe Luís could be replaced, and Seamus Coleman could certainly be the man to do so. Chelsea would have to target another attacking full-back to replace Ivanović that can score the occasional goal and lock down the opposition’s wingers.
Chelsea has also been linked to a move for West Ham United left-back, Aaron Cresswell, who could also fill the hole on the bench for Mourinho. But both Cresswell and Coleman have contracts with their current clubs through 2019, which could result in a very expensive transfer if Mourinho needed to purchase one of them, or both.
If any full-back is going to leave this summer, then we can expect Mourinho to purchase a replacement immediately. And after selling Ryan Bertrand to Southampton this January, Chelsea does not have a youth player that is ready for the first team. I do not expect Branislav Ivanović to leave this summer, for he is too valuable to Mourinho’s squad. Filipe Luís could easily leave and be replaced, either by Coleman or Cresswell.
