Chelsea Set To Table €47m Bid For €80,000-A-Week Brazilian

According to various reports in the French media today, Chelsea have joined Manchester United and Manchester City in the chase for Paris Saint Germain Brazilian defender Marquinhos. The Blues are reportedly in the market for another centre back who will be long term replacement for soon to retire legend John Terry.

Marquinhos has been linked to many clubs in the premier league in the last two transfer window. As a matter of fact, some reports in January had claimed he was on his way to England to play for Manchester United after the red devils reportedly put in a bid of €45 million for his signature.

Marquinhos joined the French capital club in the summer of 2013 from AS Roma. He has found regular playing time hard to come back in his preferred centre back position and as a result been deployed as a right back by the ligu Un Champions which has made the player unhappy – reportedly. It is believed he is open to moving away from PSG should any club that can guarantee him a berth in the centre back position come for his signature. This club could well be Chelsea.

According to the reports, Cheslea are willing to pay as much as €47m to acquire the AS Roma star. It is reported that Jose Mourinho is very keen on another defender who is versatile enough to play a couple of roles, a condition Marquinhos fullfils. Should he join Chelsea, he will be the likely ideal long term partner for Zouma in the centre of Chelsea’s defense or the long term replacement for Branislav Ivanovic.

However, at the reported fee of €47m and at least €80,000 per week as wages, I do not see how Chelsea will sanction such a move especially when you consider how prudent the club has been in the transfer market lately. Not to take anything away from the Brazilian, he is a good player, someoen I would definitely like to see at Chelsea but certainly not a player in the €47m bracket.
