A Chelsea legend, Cech has been a guaranteed ‘keeper on the team sheet since his signing in 2004. Consistently performing to outstanding levels, Petr is always discussed in the same breath as the best goalkeepers on the planet.
An issue that has risen in recent weeks and months is Thibaut Courtois; the best young goalkeeper in world football. Purchased from Genk for a small fee in 2011, Courtois has been a Chelsea player for 3 years, and is yet to play a single game for the club. Instead, he hasn’t even played second fiddle to Cech, and has been shipped out on loan to current La Liga champions Atletico de Madrid. A friend of the media for all the wrong reasons, he is a young man who either hasn’t fully matured yet or is keen to always speak his mind honestly to the press. He was recently quoted as saying he had no ‘emotional connection with Chelsea’.
The reports of confusion of Cech’s future have only come about because of Courtois. For me, it is vitally important that Chels do not make a rash decision on this, as Thibaut could serve us for the next 15 years. This decision would be made a lot easier if Cech’s performances had dropped as he has aged, but the fact is that he has consistently played to a high level.
Clubs don’t often have the lovely problem of having two completely world class goalkeepers to pick from, but of course it was going to happen to Chelsea. If it was down to me, I would bring Thibaut back for this season coming up. With Cech currently injured, it can be the perfect opportunity for him to get some pre-season games in a Chelsea shirt under his belt, and then as the season approaches a decision can be made by Jose about who his goalkeeper will be for the season. In my opinion, Courtois should now become the number 1 goalkeeper here, with Cech being used as Casillas is at Real, a cup keeper, albeit a very good cup keeper.
However, a keeper of Petr’s standard, as has happened with Thibaut, may not want to spend his days watching the matches from the side lines. Therefore, as with any player at the club, he should be allowed to go with dignity (no Wayne Rooney style arguments leading to mega-deal new contracts).
Cech has been fantastic for us for so many years, but losing Courtois and therefore losing the future best ‘keeper in the world is something we can’t afford to do.
