The Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has been trying for the last ten years to build a team that was good enough to beat Chelsea, and today he put all his eggs in the one basket by declaring that he had finally found the formula to beat the Blues.
He said (and I quote this from an Arsenal site): “If we turn up with a great performance – and I am convinced we will – we will beat them. Football is always down to the performance of the day.”
Wenger bought some comedy defenders in the summer (Kossy and Squilly) which he expected to be enough to hold off Drogba in their bi-yearly defeat to Chelsea, and again he was certain that would be enough to turn the tables. He said: “We have to stop him, to be efficient against him and I am convinced we will do that on Sunday.”
He was asked why he believed that this seasons games against Chelsea would bring a different result than usual, and he replied: “Our potential, our performance, our desire to win the game,” he said. “History does not win you games.
But the game went to the usual Chelsea plan, with Drogba scoring with a brilliant backheel before half time (Drogba of course!) and then the fantastic feint in the second half when the Arsenal defence was waiting for Drogba to score his second, but Alex came out of nowhere to blast the ball into the net. Pure class!
After seeing his dreams destroyed and his team soundly beaten yet again, Wenger finally threw in the towel and admitted that he just didn’t have the answers and couldn’t take his team any further. He apologized to the Arsenal fans and said that he hoped that they would be happier with the next coach, whoever he may be.
Okay so this is all in my imagination FOR NOW, let’s just wait until we see what Wenger says in the morning shall we?
