Chelsea are continuing their plan to freshen up their squad this summer after they effectively conceded the Premier League title to Manchester United last weekend. One of their targets is Benfica left-back Fabio Coentrao.
But TalkSport Radio is reporting that the move may possibly be hijacked by Bundesliga side Bayern Munich. The Portuguese defender has become one of the most sought after players in Europe and Benfica are thought to value the player at £26 million.
Coentrao started his career in 2005 at 16 at Rio Ave before joining Benfica in 2007. He went out on loan to several other clubs but made his breakthrough in the Benfica side in 2009. He has made 36 appearances for Benfica this season and has represented Portugal 12 times, including in all Portugal’s games at the 2010 World Cup.
Chelsea still have a chance to sign Coentrao as Bayern are only thought to be offering £19 million for the defender. There are more clubs interested in the defender, amongst them Real Madrid so Chelsea will have to put in a good offer to secure the 23-year-old.
