Despite announcements from Carlo Ancelotti that he has no intention of signing anyone in January, and Sergio Aguero stating categorically that he wouldn’t leave Atletico until June at the earliest, todays Mail is still convinced that a deal between the two clubs is still imminent.
They say that “senior Chelsea officials” have been carrying on the talks with Aguero’s agents, IMG, in the last few days, and are close to agreeing a figure of around £40m for the young Argentinian, easily breaking the record of £32.5m that Man City paid for Robinho last year.
They again repeat that personal terms for Aguero on a 4.5 year contract are agreed, and the only remaining hurdle to overcome is the price that Roman Abramovich will pay Atletico to soften the blow of losing their young superstar.
The buy-out clause on Aguero’s contract at Atletico is set at £55m, but Chelsea are still refusing to pay over £40m in the “current climate”, although what difference a recession makes to billionaires I don’t know!
Ancelotti has previously said that he is known to play games with journalists over his transfer dealings, but i maintain that the Mail is also known to be “economical with the truth” when it comes to transfer rumours, so i have no idea who to believe!
My only statement (which i have said once before) would be; Why would Chelsea work so hard to get the transfer ban suspended if they didn’t intend to buy anyone?
