What is the point of buying Pirlo?

I have found it very hard to take this move to buy Pirlo seriously, and think that there is absolutely no reason in the world for Chelsea to buy a 30-year-old midfielder, when we have an overabundance of even better players already at the club.

We have already secured Zhirkov who is earmarked for the left side of the diamond formation, even though Malouda has proved his capability in that position. Kalou has recently threatened to make himself a starter in that position in the team, but he will probably now be kept as fourth choice striker behind Drogba, Anelka and Sturridge.

Lampard will always be the first choice to play in the attacking midfield role, with probably Joe Cole as the best substitute now he’s fit. But Cole is likely to be the most creative player we have to play on the right side of the diamond.

That leaves Deco, Ballack, Essien, Mikel and now possibly Pirlo fighting over the one remaining place, and probably the most important one, defensively speaking.

Ancelotti surely wouldn’t go to so much trouble to force Abramovich to bring his favourite player to the Bridge if he wasn’t going to play him, so will there be lots of unhappy players left on the bench?

If Essien is fit he should always be a certain starter, and Mikel seems to have matured enough to make a claim for being a fixture in the side, and Ballack remains a rock, despite his age.

With all these stars in the side, how on earth can we make room for another one?

If anyone can explain this to me, please feel free!
