“I do not think about anything other than staying at Chelsea. I do not think about Spain. I’m in the best team in England. At Chelsea, we have perhaps one of the future top players of the world in Eden Hazard. This year he had a great season; he deserved to be the best player in the Premier League. There has been much criticism but we scored a lot of goals, we are the [second-best] attack of the championship. That means we have an offensive game but sometimes you have to know when to defend.

These were the words of Spanish defender, Cesar Azpilicueta, after the club finally clinched the EPL title. The player was no doubt instrumental to Chelsea all season-long, and his desire to continue playing at the club is a welcome development. Dave as he is fondly called by English Chelsea fans ( no thanks to a surname only few can pronounce without biting off their tongues ), has been on great form since 2012 when he was signed from Marseille for a token 7 million pounds. He is primarily a right-back, but has converted to a full left back because of Ivanovic.

He has gone ahead to say not even Spanish giants, Barcelona or Real Madrid can make him leave Chelsea. The 25 years old has flourished under the coach and has helped his club with a best defensive record of less goals conceded. He attributes his successful conversion to left back to the special one. He has played as a right back for 6  years of his career, and just 3 years of being on the left, he has been able to maintain his spot, shrugging off challenges from new signee Filipe Luis. The full back says of Mouriho’s help,

“You cannot rest with him. Each day is a new challenge. You have to be ready for the fight. He has made me improve, it’s important to learn from a coach like him”

As the new season approaches, Azpilicueta who has appeared 28 out of 35 league matches will always be an important player at the Bridge, even despite admitting,

“It’s difficult to play here, there is a lot of competition for places. I have managed to play, that’s good, and we have won a trophy. I have to improve my left foot in training. I try to improve every day to become more competitive.”
