With the imminent departure of Ramires this summer, Chelsea will look to replace him by signing Marco Verratti from Paris Saint Germain. The 23 year-old Italian has done wonders for Laurent Blanc this season, scoring two goals and assisting five in 29 Ligue 1 matches. Verratti, who is one of the quickest players in the world, does an amazing job of moving into open spaces and efficiently getting the ball to his strikers, Edinson Cavani and Zlatan Ibrahimović. Verratti would be a quality replacement for Ramires, and he could even battle for Oscar’s starting spot.
With Oscar being recently linked to a move away from Stamford Bridge this summer, Chelsea would have a large hole to fill in their squad. With links to players like Paul Pogba, Koke, and Andre Gomes, Verratti adds himself to a mix of world-class center midfielders. If Oscar does not leave London, I would not expect Mourinho to bid on Verratti, even if Ramires leaves. Ramires and Verratti really do not even play the same position, with the Brazilian being more of a holding midfielder, and Verratti playing more of a no. 10, a Ramires move would not affect the odds of Verratti signing for Chelsea.
Verratti, being an Italian, has publicly admitted he has dreams of playing in the Serie A, as he grew up supporting Juventus. As PSG looks to close in on a Paul Pogba deal, Verratti could be used in a swap deal for the Frenchman. But when PSG took on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge earlier in the season, he predicted that the Blues would dominate his current team, calling a 4-0 Chelsea victory. Giving some Chelsea supporters hope that Verratti would be open to playing for José Mourinho.
Marco Verratti is a wonderful player, but he would not have a role in Chelsea’s current squad. Do not expect him to sign for the west-London club this summer, unless Oscar and/or Ramires leave. Many Chelsea supporters would much rather have Paul Pogba come in to replace Ramires, who is bound for a Barcelona move. The main downside to Pogba is that he would have a price tag around £58million. This summer will surely be an interesting one.
