Chelsea is reportedly aiming to win the signatures of Manchester United targets, Edinson Cavani and Nathaniel Clyne this summer [Daily Star]. The duo would cost Chelsea around £55million, but would strengthen the squad immensely. As Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United and Liverpool look to add to their squad this summer, Mourinho will look to add Cavani as a backup for Diego Costa, and Nathaniel Clyne as a rotational center back, to help him contain Chelsea’s hold at the top of the Premier League table. Paris Saint-German and Manchester United had agreed to a £35million deal to send Cavani to Old Trafford, despite comments from PSG’s President on a possible transfer.

“As for Cavani, I’ve not met him yet, but he’s still young, he’s the future of the club. He just needs more confidence, but he showed his talent in the last game. He’ll be here again next year. We won’t even consider any offers.”

Nathaniel Clyne has done wonders for Southampton this season, and has a value around £10million, but he would go for around £20million. He could possibly be the long term replacement to Chelsea captain, John Terry, who will turn 35 years old next season. With the shaky performances of Gary Cahill earlier in the season, and Kurt Zouma playing in the midfield more than he is on defense, Chelsea should certainly be in the market for another defender.

Chelsea is certainly in for an interesting summer, and Cavani and Clyne would certainly help Mourinho next season. Cavani might be a little too expensive for a backup striker, but if Loïc Rémy and Didier Drogba are gone next season; it would be a smart move because of Diego Costa’s fitness issues. These moves seem to be a little unrealistic, but they would make sense for Chelsea. And not to mention, it keeps these two world-class talents from playing for Louis van Gaal. Chelsea could find cheaper options for a backup striker though, with links to Mauro Icardi, Paulo Dybala, and Douglas Costa. Each one would be millions cheaper than the Uruguayan, and would be fine sitting on the bench behind Diego Costa for the majority of the season.
