Agent Arrives, To Hold Talks With Chelsea, €35m Deal Could Be Announced In Days

Jorge Mendes

Definitely whatever deal that makes the Portuguese agent, Jorge Mendes get off the phone and make a physical appearance, won’t fall through. It has been reported that the super agent is in London at the moment, and he is with Benfica’s president, Luis Filipe Vieira to seal a deal involving one of the Portuguese champions bests, Nicolas Gaitan. The Argentina international is set to make that big transfer after winning his 2nd league title with the Primeira Liga side.

The move seemed long overdue, as even his initial buyout clause was reduced last season in order to reward him for a pay-rise that came when much of his teammates left for bigger clubs. He signed a contract until 2018, but he definitely won’t be staying more than this season as it seems Chelsea are ready to meet the demands of his buyout clause worth just 35 million Euros. Benfica are poised to sell him, as the club wants to raise money towards next season in order to maintain a fair financial status.

Gaitan has put up impressive displays in his attacking position roles for the club in recent seasons, and has attracted offers from Europe’s elite clubs. Manchester United, also interested in signing him, made an offer for him in the January winter transfer window, but it fell through. The Argentine who has been recently included in the nation’s squad for the South American nations cup is a versatile player, one who can play on both wings and also as attacking midfielder. He has been said to be a fine plan B provided the Sterling transfer to the Stamford bridge fails.

A deal is likely to be struck with Chelsea as his agent and the club share a good relationship. The winger would definitely add to a side with enough wingers already, but Gaitan brings something different, and the last season’s UEFA Europa League team of the year player will no doubt be a great addition at Stamford bridge if the deal clicks.
