Jose Mourinho

According to reports, Chelsea are closing on the signing of Argentine Inter Milan striker Mauro Icardi. The 22 year old striker is yet to put pen to paper on a new contract with Inter Milan despite the reports that he has agreed personal terms with the Italians.

Aside Chelsea, the high rated striker who has scored 21 goals in 44 appearances for Inter Milan this season has been linked to Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool. Now according to Metro, Chelsea are edging closer to signing the player.

According to the British paper Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has decided to take advantage of the contract impasse to sign the player as a back up for injury prone Diego Costa. Reportedly available for £22 million, the Argentine will not only be a reliable back up to Diego Costa but as well as good enough to oust the Spanish from the first team.

Although he still has till the summer of 2018 to run on his contract, the fact that he has a release clause of £22million makes Inter uncomfortable since considering his talent, many big clubs will be willing to pay the price. Should he refuse to sign a new contract with Inter Milan, Jose Mourinho can use his connection at the club to his advantage.
