Andre Villas-Boas insists that Lampard has a future at Chelsea.

Frank Lampard, now 33, has suffered a double disappointment from both the Newcastle game, when he was substituted midway into the match, and losing his starting place in the game against Valencia, and as expected, Andre Villas-Boas have stood out to pat out the smoke coming from the fire that Lampard may not be of importance to Chelsea any more.

“Frank has been fantastic. We have to select 11 and he wasn’t in this 11. Important players have been left out at Chelsea, players of immense talent,” said the former Porto boss post-match.

“He has been in a fantastic moment and is sure to threaten for the starting 11 on Monday.

“He is one of the greatest players in the world but this choice was three players in midfield because of their technical ability to keep possession and keep it on the ground without a lot of long balls.

“We know that Frank can also do this but he was not our choice for this game. He will certainly come back in the future. He has been fantastic in the way he has taken these tough decisions.”

Andre Villas-Boas thus showed that the club has progressed, and with the recent games displaying that Chelsea could in fact do better with more youthful players, this could probably  be a first act of trying to clear out older, slower players in favour for younger and more energetic players in their mid 20s. He also said that Lampard could “threaten” for a starting spot in the starting XI with Manchester city on Monday, and as such he’s leaving the benefit of doubt.

What do you think Villas-Boas is trying to indicate by leaving out Lampard for the entire Valencia game?
