Andre Villas-Boas job could lie on the outcome of the coming Valencia game.

In a few hours the defining game between Chelsea and Valencia would begin. Never in Chelsea’s recent history under the reign of Roman Abramovich has the qualification for the knock out stage been so tense. The job that Andre Villas-Boas now holds could most possibly come down to this. As have been seen Luiz Felipe Scolari have been sacked in the 08/09 season due to him not being able to win the Premiership.

It has also become vaguely believable that the seemingly criteria for a Chelsea manager to keep his job as Manager would be that of to win the Premiership. Jose Mourinho, Luiz Felipe Scolari , and Carlo Anceotti have also been sacked, and they all come as a coincidence that when they were sacked the club never finished as Champions in the Barclays Premier League. Given the recent poor run of results, despite the “career-saving'” games as some have touted the Newcastle and Wolverhampton Rovers game to be, this does not cover the fact that Chelsea is still presently languishing in fourth place and ten points behind leaders Manchester City.

Adding to this, the possibility of qualifying for the knock out stages would lie not only in the hands of Chelsea alone. Although if Chelsea manage to sniff out a goalless draw at Stamford Bridge tonight, it would still be hard for Chelsea to qualify. If Genk manage to win, then perhaps nothing less than a win is necessary to see Chelsea into the next stage. If Andre Villa-Boas even manage to fail in the qualifying for the Knock out stages, he would be committing an heinous sin of getting eliminated in the group stages which is unprecedented in the current Abramovich era.

Along with the position in the table this would warrant Andre Villas-Boas in a very precarious position to be in, despite the recent claims by the Chelsea players that Villas-Boas would be here to execute his 3-year plan. Even the affable Carlo Ancelotti was not able to move the trigger happy Abramovich with a League and Cup Double in the 09/10 season, only to be ruthlessly sacked after ending the 10/11 season empty handed, not being able to carry out his ambition sof rht eclub to the fullest.

As the players and Villas-Boas have said in multiple channels, they would not be playing out a 0-0 draw, but a win, and with the formation and the high-line defence. Thiswould only be possible for Chelsea to progress if the best in Sturridge and Mata is turned on, and with Torres turning in passes and crosses into the net for maximum converting of chances. It is only through the team playing not even at their best, but just normally, the team should be able to progress given the form of the effervescent Juan Mata, putting in scintillating crosses and assists this season. And if everything go smoothly, Andre Villas-Boas could find himself still balancing himself in the precarious seat, and if he does not, he could be shown out of the door in a 5 minute meeting the Chelsea’s board room, just as Ancelotti was after the last game in the 2010/2011 season with the loss at Everton as the final game.
