There have been persistent rumours linking Chelsea with the Benfica midfielder Angel Di Maria lately, and today the Chelsea sporting director Frank Arnesen has confirmed that the club “need to know” about Di Maria and his two team-mates, Fabio Coentrao and Javi Garcia, but he emphasised that they could not make any plans to actually buy anyone until they found out the result of their appeal to have the FIFA transfer ban suspended.
When asked about Chelsea’s interest in the trio he replied: “This does not signify that Chelsea are preparing contracts but it is necessary to follow the market.
“The club awaits a decision over transfers and when we will be able to next reinforce the squad.”
Benfica have also confirmed that there have been no official approaches for any of their players so far.
