When Atletico Madrid president, Enrique Cerezo was asked if Filipe Luis will likely head back to the Vicente Calderon by next summer, all the 67 year-old cinematographer could say was,
“The return of Filipe Luis? He’s a fantastic player, for me he is one of the best fullbacks in the world.”
Well-said Cerezo, but does that mean the Brazilian international won’t be welcomed at the Rojiblancos? Filipe Luís has had somewhat of a disappointing Premier League debut, making just 13 league appearances after failing to beat Azpilicueta to the starting berth at left back. Despite this, coach Diego Simeone has continued to lavish praise on him, and even gone ahead to suggest that the almost 30 year-old defender will be welcomed if he decides to make a return.
Chelsea bought him for 16 million pounds last July, during the summer transfer, and it was hoped he will serve as good replacement for the departed Ashley Cole. A delighted Filipe said after the deal was sealed,
“This move is a dream come true for me. I now have the opportunity to play for Chelsea, and also in the Premier League .I’m very happy and looking forward to getting started and giving my best for the team during the coming seasons”.
But it doesn’t seem he will be spending the remaining 2 seasons at the Stamford bridge as Chelsea only sees him as a makeweight in the possible transfer of either of Koke or Griezmann to the side. Although he earlier expressed his content with being second-choice behind the Spain international who was converted to a left-back, as he is primarily a right-footer, but after only 9 premier league starts, the Brazil international is keen on a return to the La Liga where he enjoyed considerably a large amount of success.
