Benitez: I'd be happy to pass Chelsea reigns to Pep Guardiola

Benitez admits he would like the Chelsea job permanently, but would not be unhappy passing on the managerial crown as long as they win trophies under his reign.

“Guardiola has a fantastic record,” Benitez told BBC Sport. “If he comes and we’ve won a lot of trophies, I’ll be very pleased.

“When I decided to come here, I knew I was signing a contract for six or seven months so I was not thinking about more after these seven months.”

Rafa has been subject to abuse from Chelsea fans since taking over, but Benitez understands the hostility.

“I understand the feelings of the fans because of the rivalry between both clubs (Liverpool and Chelsea),” he said.

“After the improvement of the team, the way I will play and the style I will have, I think a lot of fans will say: ‘Maybe we were too hard and we have to give him the chance to bring the confidence back to the team and the fans’.”

Personally, I’m trying not to be too anti-Benitez, because the team needs support. Chelsea FC is about a lot more than just a manager. The team, the history, the fans, the players, they are all important. The team is turning a corner and that is all that matters right now.

He is becoming very interesting as a coach, every game tactically is always a surprise for me. last game we managed to capture the midfield zone from the very beginnning if it is possible to repeat in Europe we would have a very strong side.
