Chelsea £25m Target Reveals Five Years Contract Has Been Signed

Raphael Varane

José Mourinho was ready to bring in Real Madrid center-back, Raphaël Varane, this summer. According to an interview with Varane, he claims that he has just signed a new contract with the King’s Club through 2020, and that he wants to spend many seasons at the Santiago Bernabéu.  This is not good news for most Chelsea supporters. Varane is only 21 years of age, and is already rated as one of the best defenders in the world. With John Terry now 34, and Gary Cahill being inconsistent at times, Chelsea was thought to be in the business for a new center-back this summer. Having been linked to other defenders as well, such as Nathaniel Clyne, Mats Hummels, Aymeric Laporte and Marquinhos, it isn’t surprising to see a reporter ask Varane that question.  Rumors had even been in place that Real Madrid had agreed to a £25 million transfer fee to send Varane to Stamford Bridge.

New rumors have surfaced of a Chelsea raid of Real Madrid, with a deal including Gareth Bale, Raphaël Varane, and Jesé Rodríguez for a whopping sum of £130million. This move is now extremely unlikely with Varane not wanting to leave Madrid, and an Eden Hazard for Gareth Bale swap rumors put to sleep by the Belgian winger. I do not expect Chelsea to be in the market for a first-team center-back this summer, because of the recent performances of 20 year-old, Kurt Zouma. Zouma had come on as a sub in the Arsenal match yesterday, and before that had the massive responsibility of man-marking Marouane Fellaini, which he did an amazing job of. Zouma has also showed that he is capable of being the back-up to holding midfielder, Nemanja Matić, and with promising teenage sensation, Andreas Christensen, playing for the U-21 Chelsea side this season, it is extremely doubtful Chelsea will be looking to add another center-back this summer.

All Chelsea supporters were ecstatic to first hear the news of Varane being linked with a move to Stamford Bridge, now disappointed to hear that the player does not want to leave his current club. A problem Chelsea does not normally have to deal with.
