According to reports in both Metro and some section of the Spanish media, Chelsea have tabled a bid of €60m for high rated France international Antoine Griezmann. According to the reports, Chelsea have indentified the Frenchman as the ideal partner for injury prone Diego Costa. Jose Mourinho has reportedly been impressed by the versatility of the former Arsenal target.
Antoine Griezmann who only just last summer joined Atletico Madrid is versatile enough to play on both wings and is able to play upfront alone as a striker or behind the striker a second striker. This versatility will go a long way to help Chelsea whenever the club has injury problems should he sign for the Blues thats. Griezmann was linked to a move to Arsenal and Liverpool last summer but ended up signing for Atletico Madrid in a deal reportedly worth £24 million.
In the 32 games he has played for Atletico in the la liga this season, he has scored a total of 22 goals and assisted one other goal which for a player that was playing on the wing for Real Sociedad last season is an impressive record.
His goal scoring exploits has ensured Atletic do not feel the impact of Mario Mandžukić’s poor start to his La liga career.
Should Chelsea manage to sign him, he will not only be able to play with Diego Costa, he will be a viable option when the Brazilian/Spaniard is out with his normal dose of hamstring injuries.
However, at the reported £43.5 million or €60m he is a bit expensive. For that price Chelsea can get two good players. Griezmann is a very good player no doubt but considering we already have Diego Costa, he will be too expensive player to buy especially as a back up. However, signing him even at €60m will make a lot of sense if Oscar is leaving. He will be a worthy replacement for the Brazilian and he will be able to cover for Costa when necessary.
