German Bundesliga team, Borussia Dortmund has announced that its midfielder, Ilkay Gundogan will not be signing a new deal as his present contract nears completion by 2016. The 24 years old German international has been linked with a move away from the German league, reportedly with Manchester United as a likely destination. But Chelsea has joined in the race for the player’s signature, and they are likely to have him in the blue’s color by next season.
The new champions of the finishing Premier League have expressed concerns over the squad’s lack of performance in recent seasons of the UEFA Champions League. They lost in the continental game at the round of 16 to Ligue one Champions, PSG. There have been reports that Chelsea could allow midfielder Mikel Obi leave for Madrid, after Ancelotti is said to be making plans to bring him to Spain. And Brazilian Ramires could be on his way out of the team too. Hence a need for a replacement midfielder that meets the special one’s standard, and Ilkay Gundogan is one.
The German star has featured in 18 league games for Dortmund, with 3 goals to his credit. He has been described by charismatic coach, Jurgen Klopp as a complete and intelligent midfielder with numerous strength – features that are requisites to excel in the Chelsea’s midfield. Jose Mourinho had wanted the services of Gundogan while he was head coach at Real Madrid, and he is still keen on having the player under him by next season. The Dortmund star who has earned comparison with Michael Carrick due to his tactical discipline and intelligence in possession, is likely to be in Chelsea next season and not Manchester United. The transfer window opens in two months’ time, and Chelsea are ready to hijack the deal and win the bid for the player.
