Chelsea are continually linked with top strikers across the globe, and I can see some substance behind this latest prospective target.
Mario Gomez, 27, has been Bayern’s top goalscorer for the past two seasons, scoring a huge 39 and 41 goals in all competitions.
Roman Abramovich has been a keen admirer of Gomez, who has been a key player for both Germany and Bayern in recent years, and will see him as the perfect alternative to number one target Falcao, should the forward decide to stay with Athletico.
The German international is thought to be available because of the form of Mario Mandzukic, who has 11 goals in 12 games this season. Jupp Heynckes see’s the two forwards as too similar to play along side each other, and with the Croatian in such fine form, they my look to cash-in on their asset, who is currently missing out through injury.
Bayern Munich paid around £30m to land Gomez in the summer of 2009 and Chelsea are willing to offer a fee in the region of £40m to tempt the German giants into a sale.
I would love to see Gomez at Chelsea, who wouldn’t? But my preference has to be Falcao, who can’t seem to stop scoring! The striker has currently helped Athetico Madrid to second place, 3 points off of La Liga leaders Barcelona, and may wish to play out the season to see how far they can go. Who will be no. 1 target come January?
I don’t think Bayern should transfer Mario Gomez because he’s Bayern’s prised possession.
