Chelsea have a new right back target at Euro 2012

With Jose Bosingwa being allowed to leave this summer, Chelsea are in need of a quality right back. Branislav Ivanovic can play there, as can Paulo Ferreira, but Roman Abramovich and Roberto Di Matteo have big ambitions for the club and they are ready to do whatever it takes to challenge for major honours.

Dutch 24-year old international Gregory van der Wiel was the number one target and reports from the press suggested that he would soon be on his way to Stamford Bridge. Talksport reports, however, that Portuguese side Benfica have already spoken to Ajax regarding the defender’s transfer.

Also, his performances so far in Euro 2012 have not been very impressive, but then again, you could say that about most of Holland’s team. A right back who has been impressive is France’s Mathieu Debuchy. Chelsea are now looking at intercepting his imminent transfer to Newcastle.

He gave Ashley Cole a torrid time in France’s game against England, showing great pace and skill. Maybe Ashley gave Di Matteo to recommend him, or his former Lille team mate Eden Hazard has put a word in. With a reported price tag of just £6 million he looks like an absolute steal.

The only remaining question is which one do we go for? Unless Chelsea buy them both and let them fight for their first team place.
