The Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck has admitted that the club was chasing Luka Modric, but only because Andre Villas-Boas told Roman Abramovich that he needed a couple more top midfielders, and not because he specifically named the Tottenham playmaker.
Buck said today: “Most clubs don’t want to talk about players they are interested in but the Modric situation became public,” said Buck.
“We did make an offer, (Tottenham chairman) Daniel Levy has rejected that offer and I don’t know if it will go any further, we will have to see.
“Andre didn’t give us a shopping list but he did tell us where he thought we could improve.
“He did mention some players but it was not a case of ‘I want this guy and I want that guy’ because it is more than just selecting the players.
“It is whether the player is available, what the price is and every other dynamic that goes with it.
“But Andre is working very well with the board and directly with Roman Abramovich in terms of looking at the squad and trying to see whether there is anything that needs to be done.”
That sits well with Villas-Boas saying today that the club could be looking at other midfielders (like Samir Nasri) and were not concentrating all their efforts on just one player.
AVB said: “I just explained to you the sense of urgency in midfield.
“But it doesn’t mean that it’s Luka.
“Not that I’m interested, but you have Samir Nasri terminating contract.
“He’s one of the most exciting players in the Premier League and that’s the reality, as well as Luka, as well as other players.”
So it is quite possible that Chelsea may decide to enter the bidding for Arsenal’s Samir Nasri now that the Gunners have decided to cash in on the Frenchman, especially if Villas-Boas thoughts have anything to do with it.
I can certainly see Bruce Buck and Roman Abramovich discussing the fact that Nasri would be £10m cheaper than Modric….
Pls AVB ROMAN BRUCE go 4 nasri.
Both are good and quality player but Abramovich and AVB i will be glad to see modrich and samir Nasri in our squad.
Let it happen now rather than later 4 our middle to be massive weapon. we need both pls and off load the ageing benayoun. Hear my cry Abramovich..
Chelsea 4 life
I also agree MODRIC great space and nasri can score. If we really want to win the champions league and EPL this two are the mid-fielders we need to sign. Or we wil end up like arsenal.
weather modric or Nasri, we need to act fast cos we can’t continue like this, our midfield is not strong enough….. Also, we need wingers to energise our squad……… True blues
Roman pls kindly go 4 nasri.. For chelsea sake and the Fans
Both will be good for the club cos in stoke match, torres was doing d dribbling to create space instead of midfielders. Kudos to Fernando
Pls Abramovish and AVB give us both or one. From the game yesterday,we can see that delay is dangerously dangerous.
We need both players to even think of challenging for trophys dis season. D way F Tores played yesterday was outstanding, he shw d kind of player he was at anfield 2 season ago. AVB shld b given time 2 succeed at chelsea, I see a bright future
4 him. Pls let put faith in his vison. Bues 4 life 1
pls AVB, we all know dat d team played very well nd not their very best yesterday. so we need to sign some creative midfielders lyk luka modric or samir nasri 2 enhance nd strengthens d ageing suad.
Nasri & Luka are great players, I will like to see both of dem handling d blues midfield dys season…
Torres tried to dribble through the Stoke defence a number of times yesterday and his efforts were appreciated. But it just reinforces Chelsea’s need for a tricky winger/striker. There are players out there who are specialized in what Torres attempted. Ronaldo and Neymar spring to mind. What Torres attempted is Neymar’s bread & butter, and he does it with twice the effect. Modric is the right answer for a playmaker but he cannot dribble through a defence. Neymar’s tricks and skills scatter defences regularly. If Modric is the next signing, we must follow up with Neymar. Yes, he is young and has a big head, and Santos don’t want to let him go. But we must go for what we need. I think Roman should make Santos an offer they cannot refuse; we don’t need Neymar going to our opposition.
nasri is the better choice coz he is available now though even modric seems to be available as spurs have resigned to loosing him. abramovic should something fast b4 we get our team on the wrong footage
