Chelsea supporters believed that 19 year old Brazilian starlet was on his way to Stamford Bridge soon. Chelsea was rumored to have bid around £4.5million for the attacking midfielder, but FC Porto increased their bid, topping Chelsea’s. Atlético Paranaense, Nathan’s current club, had agreed to the transfer, and Nathan was at the Emirates on Sunday to watch the London Derby. Rumors also had it that Nathan had already passed his medical in London, and that his agent was just working out the details to the contract. This is poor news for Chelsea fans, for Nathan is a brilliant player with an extremely bright future.
José Mourinho already has loads of great talent in his youth system, and Nathan would’ve had to compete with players like Izzy Brown, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Dom Solanke, Jeremy Boga, and Kasey Palmer. The Chelsea U-18 side retained the F.A. Cup yesterday, beating Manchester City on the aggregate, 5-2. With the U-21 side winning the U.E.F.A. Cup this year also, Mourinho certainly has large amounts of talent ready to go for these next few years. For Brazil fans, this might be good news, for Chelsea has a bad reputation of ruining young starlet’s careers. I still suspect Mourinho to make another move for Nathan, before he makes his Porto move final.
Nathan has not scored for the Serie A club yet, because he rejected a contract in October, which sent him down to the U-23 side and he has not been called up yet. Nathan has also attracted interest from the likes of Manchester City, who are in the business to boost their youth squad this summer also. With summer signing Mario Pašalić flying through the ranks at Chelsea, some might deem Nathan has not needed. Chelsea certainly has plenty of young talent, but any club could use more youth.
Nathan is a unique talent, with loads of potential. Expect to hear his name being brought up in the following years as he expands on his talent. FC Porto might be able to provide the 19 year-old quality first-team minutes, but if they are not, they have a storied youth academy as well.
