Chelsea supporters are in for an exciting summer, with links to all types of players, most recently, 25-year old full back, Aaron Cresswell. The English international is currently playing for West Ham United, and dominating on the pitch. Cresswell has been linked to Chelsea, Manchester City, and Arsenal, but is reportedly happy at Upton Park, and ready to sign a new contract. But according to reports, West Ham and Chelsea have reached an agreement of £20million to send the English full-back to Stamford Bridge. If Mourinho is actually prepping to bring Cresswell in, then expect to see current Chelsea full-back, Filipe Luís on his way out after just one season in London. Luís, who is said to be unsettled by his lack of matches, has been linked to multiple moves away from Stamford Bridge. According to SportsMediaNet, Chelsea and Inter Milan agreed on a loan deal for the Brazilian, with a permanent move to be made official in 2016.
Cresswell would be a good signing for Chelsea and a fit replacement if Filipe Luís is indeed on his way out of Stamford Bridge. Cresswell made his professional debut for Tranmere Rovers in 2008, before switching to play for Ipswich Town in 2011. He made 138 appearances for Ipswich, scoring six goals, before being sold for only £4million to West Ham. His time at Upton Park was the beginning of Cresswell’s exposure to big clubs like Chelsea, where he has featured in 34 matches this year.
Some might question why Mourinho would want to pay £20million for a full-back, when he recently sold Ryan Bertrand to Southampton for only £10million. A fee in the area of £6million-£8million would be a much more reasonable price for Cresswell, but with clubs like Manchester City and Arsenal also competing for his signature, Chelsea are bound to have to pay up if they are really interested in purchasing the 25 year-old. Cresswell could possibly turn out to be another Filipe Luís, seeing only the rare match when either Branislav Ivanović or César Azpilicueta is not available. I do expect Chelsea to sign another full-back this summer, and Cresswell would certainly be a good one.
