According to reports on Spanish website TMW, Chelsea and Nigeria international midfielder John Obi Mikel is interesting European champions Real Madrid who are reportedly set to make a bid to sign the Nigerian. According to the website, Real Madrid have indentified Mikel as the ideal replacement for Khedira who is likely to leave the club after failing to sign a new contract deal.
Mikel joined Chelsea in 2006 after a big transfer saga that involved his current club and Manchester United. Manchester United had claimed Mikel had signed a deal with them but the player and his agent denied the supposed deal. Chelsea ended up winning the battle to sign the Nigerian after reportedly paying a compensation to Manchester United.
He initially struggled to get into Chelsea team but ended up being a key member of Jose Mourinho’s squad in the Portugese’s first season. However, his form has diminished in the last 2-3 years and has practically been reduced to a benchwarmer which makes one wonder why Real Madrid will want a player considered not good enough for Chelsea.
This rumour in my opinion is absolute rubbish. Real Madrid do not even need Mikel even if Khedira leaves. They already bought Lucas from Brazil in January, have Illaramendi who also plays that role and if they feel the need for another defensive minded midfielder, they have the money to sign someone who is better than Mikel.
