Chelsea set to battle London rivals for 17 year-old Championship star

Chelsea are all set to battle it out with Fulham and Tottenham Hotspur to sign 17 year-old sensation Will Hughes from Derby County.

Hughes made his senior debut as a 90th minute substitute in November of last year, and has been a first-team regular this season in midfield, scoring 2 goals in his 23 appearances so far this term.

He was awarded the NPower Football League Young Player of the Month Award for November and has impressed many scouts that have been sent to watch the youngster.

The attacking midfielder admitted he was shocked at how far he has come this year, saying: “I’m extremely proud to receive the award and a little bit shocked to be honest, especially when you look at the names that have won it in the past.

“The last year or so has been something of a whirlwind for me. So much has happened in such a short space of time, and to get this award is another memorable moment.”

The England U21 also admitted he only expected to warm the bench this season.

Barcelona and all the big Premier League clubs have him on their radar, with Barcelona having a detailed report written about him on his exploits with England U17.

Chelsea are reported to be lining up his signature, with a view to keeping him at Derby until the end of the season. Fulham appear to be their biggest threat, with the rival West London club willing to let him fight for a place in their first-team.

Chelsea have an enormous amount of talent in the attacking midfield position and the youngster would not be able to contend with the likes of Oscar, Eden Hazard and Juan Mata, yet! If he was to come to Chelsea he could learn from the best in the business.

Spurs are also expected to try to sign Hughes, but would be in same boat as Chelsea but with alot less appeal. Chelsea should bring him to the club to learn from Frank Lampard before he leaves. Will looks as if he has the potential to contend for Premier League titles in the future, but with which club?
