We’re reportedly closing on a 3 player, triple buy from La Liga champions, Atletico. With the recently confirmed sale of David Luiz to PSG for a somewhat mental fee of around £50m; it’s safe to say we have some money to play with this transfer window.
The first and probably most popular part of the deal is the £32 million purchase of Diego Costa. After an amazing season in La Liga, it looks almost certain that he’ll be wearing a blue shirt next season. The rumours have been circling for months now and Sky Sources reported that a deal had been agreed between the two clubs. This will not only be popular with the fans but it could finally put an end to the striker struggle we’ve been facing. He looks to be the perfect fit for the system we play, and hopefully he can be the player to utilise the space around the opponents defences, which none of the recent strikers have been able to do.
Secondly, a £19 million deal to sign Brazilian left back Filipe Luis is reportedly in place. In my opinion this would be a slightly less popular and effective signing. It’s clear we need to sign a left back to bolster our options, hopefully we move Dave back to right back once we have signed one. However, when the options are assessed, Filipe Luis does look the best player based on current ability; but, I think we would reap the rewards of going all out for England youngster Luke Shaw. A boyhood Chelsea fan, he is home-grown, high potential, class player, who knows the Premier League well already. Luis is already in his prime, and paying a £19 million fee will only get us a maximum of 4/5 good years from him. Shaw, although he will be more expensive, could provide us with 10-15 years of service, which would more than pay back the fee, and I feel the added bonus of him being home-grown means he should be the option we choose.
The third and final Atletico player that we’re looking at is Tiago. Although he’s getting on a bit now, at 33, he represents a safe player to go for, being that he’s on a free transfer. And seeing as he’s been here before (a Jose favourite in the 04/05 title winning season) I think he could potentially provide solid back-up. After seeing him against us in the Champions League, I think he could do a good job, and at the end of the day, he seems as if he still loves the Chels.
