Chelsea Could Make Summer Move For Mat Hummels

Mats Hummels

According to reports, German Bundesliga club, Borussia Dortmund are set to listen to any transfer offers for their captain Mats Hummels come the end of the season. This according to reports, has put Chelsea on alert. Chelsea are reportedly ready to make a move for him and are ready to pay as much as £35 million.

Hummels has in the last one year been constantly linked to a move to Manchester United and Arsenal but nothing has so far come out of the links as the player decided to remain in Germany for another year.

Do Chelsea need him?

It is indeed hard to see how useful Hummels would be in Chelsea considering the blues are not short of talent in the centre-back area, with Club Captain, John Terry already putting pen to paper on a contract extension with the club and the emergence of young French defender, Kurt Zuma who has been exceptional whenever called upon by Mourinho, the blues also have Garry Cahill who is a good player even though his form has been erratic so far this season.

One can argue that in recent games, the Chelsea defence has been exposed and it’s time for them to plan ahead with the likes of John Terry and Branislav Ivanovic not getting any younger, but Mats Hummels isn’t the solution either. The German would be better off in clubs like Manchester United or Arsenal which their style of play would be easy for him to adapt to.

Recently Chelsea have been linked to a number of young talented defenders around the world. Defenders like Marquinhos of French Champions, Paris Saint-Germain who is valued by his club at around £40 million, he is a centre-back by trade but can play at right back as well as he showed against Chelsea in the Champions League. The fact that he is just 20 years of age makes it even more interesting. Another centre-back that has been linked to the blues is Raphael Varane of Real Madrid who might be eager to leave the Spanish giants due to lack of first team action and with the club offering Portuguese International, Pepe a new deal, his future at Madrid doesn’t look bright, and might be tempted to join Jose Mourinho at Chelsea, the same manager who handed him his debut at Real Madrid when he was still with the Spanish side’s manager.

I am of the opinion that Chelsea could do with a player like Varane who is a long term replacement for John Terry rather than Hummels who is an established name and who will want instant first team action which may not be totally possible with John Terry still around. He is 21-years-old ( five-years-younger than Hummels ), has played on the big stage ( the world cup and the champions league ) and is likely to be available for about £25 million and his wage demand will be considerably lower than that of the German.
