In another raid by the EPL Champions on Atletico Madrid, the 2014/2015 season might be Diego Godín’s last season at the Vicente Calderon. The central defender might be on his way to England by summer, as Chelsea are keen on getting the experienced central defender. Chelsea already have his former teammates, Diego Costa and Thibaut Courtois with the recent EPL title holders. And his current teammates, Koke and Griezmann are also being targeted by the Blues. He is likely to be the next “victim”.
Last season, Atletico Madrid lost just 4 games and conceded 26 times in the entirety of the La Liga season. They won the league. Chelsea has already conceded 28 times this season, with 2 more matches to go. Both teams did defensively well in their winning campaigns no doubt. One of the reasons why Atletico boasts of such a record is Godin. His most important contribution however came via his 49th minute equalizer goal for the Rojiblancos on final match day against Barcelona. Godin’s goal was enough to secure the club a first league trophy in 18 years. A week later, his 36th minute goal almost handed Atletico the UEFA Champions League trophy. Such are the qualities of the set-pieces converting defender, and Chelsea are keen to have him in their squad for 18 million pounds.
As club’s skipper, John Terry resigns at the end of the coming season. Jose Mourinho sees the 29 year-old Godin, who is one of the best defenders in the world, as an ideal replacement for the former England international. Godin is also been eyed by Manchester United, but it is being said that the Uruguayan international rather prefers Chelsea. The La Liga winner has made 32 league appearances for the team this season, with 3 goals to his name.
