Tim Sherwood has asked Chelsea to either activate Benteke’s buyout clause of £32.5 Million or forget getting him for lesser. This comes on the heels of reports from dailies that Chelsea is interested in signing up the Belgian. According to the Daily Star, Sherwood is quoted as saying “There’s a buyout clause in his contract so it will be impossible for us to stop him if he wanted to go, but someone has to meet that buyout clause because if they don’t, it won’t even be considered. We don’t want to lose him.”
This is testament to the fact that after his recovery from injury, Benteke has been a pivotal and key component to the Clarets avoiding relegation. His goals and contributions has kept them up and gotten them into the FA cup final. And this is why Chelsea are interested in him. Our season was going just fine till Costa sustained his hamstring injury. And then the goals seemed to dry up. Loic Remy tried his best certainly but he is not just as lethal as Costa and lacks that first touch. While age finally caught up with Drogba. Of course we won the title due to the hard work and never say never spirit of the squad, relying on goals coming from the midfield.
However, next season will be a different ball game entirely. Other top teams like Man City, Arsenal, Man Utd and Liverpool will be looking to bolster their squad, and this is why Chelsea needs to meet Benteke’s clause. After all, Drogba has departed and Remy is still not as reliable. Hence the need to sign Benteke. He is another Costa in the mold, much younger and pairing him with Costa will see the Blues firing on all cylinders to retain the title. So hurry up Mourinho and sign this proven goal scorer in the league.
