When it was becoming obvious that ex Ivory Coast international, Didier Drogba wouldn’t be staying longer than this season at the Stamford bridge following his 2nd stint with the club, questions were raised as to whom would fit into his shoes, just like they were raised when he left the first time. But central defender, Cahill has an answer : Diego Costa. The Spaniard ended the season with 20 league goals, and Cahill says the 26 year-old Atletico forward has all it takes to replace Drogba.
“They’re big shoes to fill but Diego couldn’t have started his Chelsea career any better. He’s had a couple of injuries but nevertheless his goalscoring ratio has been phenomenal. He’ll be a big player here and with Diego in the team you’re a far better side.”
Drogba bade Chelsea goodbye as he played the last league match in the 3 – 1 victory over Sunderland on Sunday. The 37 year-old forward was signed at the beginning of the season on a one-year deal, and although he still wants to play one more season of football, but he wouldn’t be doing it at Chelsea as he wants where a lot of playing time can be afforded him. Costa was brought in to fill the void in the attacking lineup, and he has shown signs of greatness thus far. But only time will tell if he will be able to attain the legend status that Drogba did attain.
