Corinthians await Chelsea or Monterrey in World Club Cup final

Brazilian side Corinthians beat Egypt’s Al Ahly 1-0 to claim their place in Sunday’s World Club Cup final.

The South American champions now await the result of tomorrow’s semi-final fixture between Chelsea FC and Mexico’s Monterrey to find out who will challenge them to be crowned champions of the world.

Chelsea are odds-on favourites to win the World Club Cup but there are no guarantees in football.

Corinthians scored the only goal of today’s game in the first-half, with a neat downward header from Peruvian Paolo Guerrero, who met Douglas’ cross from the left-wing.

Al Ahly didn’t seem to show much fight in the second-half, who dominated the last 20 minutes but failed to show any real conviction.

Al Ahly continued to press but hardly tested the Corinthians goalkeeper, and will now face the loser of tomorrows semi-final, in the third-place play-off before Sunday’s final.

Chelsea will have seen nothing to fear from today’s match, and will be confident of a win in Sunday’s final, should they qualify.

Chelsea make their debut in this competition tomorrow, and will be hoping to win this competition to cap off a great year, in which Chelsea finally won the Champions League, a trophy that had so far eluded them.

Chelsea had previously been unlucky not to win the Champs League, with the famous Liverpool ‘ghost goal’ (that didn’t cross the line) eliminating them in the semi’s in 2005, and the famous slip from John Terry as he was about to take the championship-winning penalty against Manchester United in the 2008 final.

Chelsea will not be taking this trophy for granted, and have named their strongest squad possible for the competition.
