Blues’ Rooney chase: Could they do better?
This summer has been an interesting one to date as far as Chelsea are concerned. Eventually, they were able to bring back Jose Mourinho for a second spell as manager, while Roman Abramovich celebrated the 10th anniversary of his takeover of the club. They’ve also managed to sign a couple of young stars in Marco van Ginkel and Andre Schurrle for something in the region of £25m.
While both new arrivals and veteran ‘keeper Mark Schwarzer would add something to the club, there is one area where the Blues appear to be light: up front. The promising Romelu Lukaku aside, Chelsea haven’t got many goals in them. The hugely underwhelming Fernando Torres and injury-prone Demba Ba might not have what they need to challenge on home and European fronts.
Heading south?
It’s no secret that Chelsea are after the signature of Manchester United’s troubled star Wayne Rooney. Having recently had a bid turned down by the current Premier League champions, it seems that Mourinho is desperate to get his man. While Rooney is a renowned goalscorer, his extra baggage might dissuade the Blues from bidding more than they have done thus far.
If he costs £30m or less, the price would probably be about right, but his wages, which could be well in excess of £250,000 a week may prove to be a stumbling block. Although Chelsea can afford him, perhaps there is better value elsewhere if they need an additional striker to complement the likes of Juan Mata and Eden Hazard in midfield.
Scouring the world
If Rooney is out of reach, either because of hesitation on Chelsea’s part to up their bids for Rooney or United’s reluctance to sell, who else could they sign? With some of the world’s top strikers deciding to either stay put with their current clubs or seal moves to some of the nouveau riche of European football such as Monaco or Paris Saint-German, their options are limited.
However, there are a few strikers who might flourish should they join the blues. Aston Villa’s Christian Benteke is a fine example, enjoying a great debut season in the Premier League despite his current club’s struggles against relegation. He will probably cost £25m, and is younger and fitter than Rooney, plus some of his Belgium teammates including Hazard and Lukaku are already there.
Other possible options might include Valencia’s Roberto Soldado, the promising Italy striker Stephan El Shaarawy of AC Milan and Robert Lewandowski of Borussia Dortmund. The latter two might be harder to get hold of though, while Soldado is 28 now, and is unproven at the very highest level. For now, it looks like Rooney or no one.
This is not a value article for all the time you take in writing it. What would benteke do for Chelsea that Lukaku could not provide? What morale would it give to two players from the same country competing to lead the striking force in the next world cup? Is anything Soldado can give Chelsea and Torres can not provide? If there is the need to sign a new striker, let Chelsea at least go for a decent one. Even the biting werewolf (Suarez) is better than all these bunch and so is Higuain who is already off to Napoli.
There’s no need to over emphasis the need for Chelsea to buy at least one top striker. By January if they’re seeing themselves at between fourth to sixth position, they’d take a fire brigade action,by then it might be extremely difficult to get a real tested top striker, and they may repeat the same mistake they made on Torres. January is not a conducive time to get a top player.
Mourinho cannot play and score goals by himself,so if he and Chelsea are playing down the urgency of the need for a top striker,it means he don’t really know what the team needs, and very soon the blame would fall on him.The only striker I think at present in the Chelsea squad that can add something to what he did last season is Lukaku,on the rest I’ve got a big doubt,or let them prove me wrong!
Why wouldn’t Chelsea seriously go for Suarez? This guy was simply the highest goalscorer last season in the epl as far as I’m concerned,if not for his undisciplined behavior,he would have led on goals until the end. He has got a clause on his contract why not activate it? By January we’ll see where Chelsea is on the table if they don’t buy any quality striker!
This piece of writing is as stupid as the writer it self. mtcheew go and get ur self a work and stop fooling around writing garbage
Chelsea need a striker, rooney or lewandowsi
I knw a big offer 4 lewandowski will make him come to chelsea. Lets say £40 million. He is still very young and can perfectly fit into chelsea squad, he can play alone in d attack, he can be paired with Lukaku or Elnino. He can serve chelsea more than Wayne. Thats my opinion though
Chelsea should buy ibrahimovic!
Yeah, Chelsea desperately needs a proven striker b4 the season begins else DISASTER!
Lewandoski is the answer…
i want chelsea to buy lewandowsky and rooney
