Daniel Sturridge has been impressing everyone it seems with his performances for Chelsea on their pre-season tour, so much so that Bolton are preparing to bring him back to the Reebok Stadium for this season.
Bolton manager Owen Coyle is hoping to persuade Chelsea and Andre Villas-Boas to loan him Sturridge for the coming season. Speaking in the Sunday Mirror Coyle said, “Daniel is such an outstanding talent, but I think he has to play week in week out now.”
Sturridge has been used in a wide position by Villas-Boas on tour, but Sturridge prefers to play in the middle and he would get the opportunity to do that at Bolton.
Coyle said, “I played him through the middle and he was sensational for me. He’s such an intelligent footballer that the kid can probably play anywhere if the truth be told. He’s got a real appetite for the game.”
Coyle would love to have Sturridge for the season, but he is philosophical about his chances of landing him. He said, “I always felt he wanted to play through the middle, but you have to put into context. If you are told you are going to start in the Chelsea team then you are prepared to start anywhere. You would be prepared to take Petr Cech’s gloves if you thought you were going to start.”
It is nice to see someone being honest for a change, and as much as Sturridge would like to play through the middle at Bolton he would surely play anywhere for Chelsea in the first team. Villas-Boas has himself been praising Sturridge on his performances over the last couple of weeks, but it remains to be seen what plans he has for his young striker. More will become clear over the next few days once Chelsea are back in England and in training at Cobham.
