Chelsea is ready to make a £22million bid for Inter Milan striker Mauro Icardi. The Argentine striker has scored 18 Serie A goals this season, in just 31 appearances. He has attracted interest from some of Europe’s largest clubs. Chelsea would have to compete mostly with Manchester United, who is ready to up their bid to around £30million.
With question marks surrounding Diego Costa’s fitness, and Loïc Rémy’s and Didier Drogba’s future at the club not certain, Chelsea need to purchase another striker this summer. With links to Paulo Dybala, Charlie Austin, Danny Ings, Christian Benteke, and Douglas Costa, Chelsea is not short of options for another striker. Not to mention, Mourinho already has Dominic Solanke, and Izzy Brown, both teenage sensations with extremely bright futures.
£22million is extremely expensive for a backup striker, but Icardi is a special talent. And only being 22 years-old, he has a bright future in front of him. But Paulo Dybala has been just as impressive, if not more, than Icardi, and could actually be cheaper than the Argentine. But for Chelsea, the most ideal option would be Charlie Austin, who is currently fourth in the Premier League in goals. Mourinho is certainly fond of Queens Park Ranger strikers, after purchasing Loïc Rémy on deadline day this summer from the London based club.
Icardi and Inter have been in disagreement in contract talks, which is where these rumors started, but Icardi recently commented on the situation saying…
“It’s at a difficult point, but today is not about that. The people of San Siro love me, and I respect them so much. I try to make them happy in every game. I’m young, I’m only 22, and I hope I can have a career like Zanetti did. Although if I score 200 Serie A goals I’ll probably retire earlier than he did!”
These quotes make some people believe that Icardi might take the pay cut to stay with the San Siro side, but even with these remarks it seems unlikely that Icardi will be a playing for Inter Milan next season. Whether he will be playing for Chelsea or Manchester United is still up in the air, and it will be very interesting to see how the situation plays itself out.
