According to a report by El Confidencial, Chelsea has reached an agreement with Atletico Madrid to sign the Spanish international striker Diego Costa. Jose Mourinho had on several occasions this season express his desire to bring in new strikers due to the inability of his current forwards to bury chances created by the midfielders. Costa, whom reports say has a €60 Million release clause inserted in his contract, is also wanted by Arsenal.
Players like Samuel Eto’o who was brought in during the summer transfer window, Demba Ba who was signed by Rafael Benitez, and Fernando Torres have not lived up to the standard expected of them; and it does look like the club has had enough of heartaches. Ba, who scored the winner against PSG was supposed to go out on loan to Arsenal on the last day of the transfer window, but had to be stopped by the boss is however, expected to live anytime in the summer.
For Samuel Eto’o, the club is unlikely to keep him even as his contract expires at the end of the season. The arrangement that brought him to Stanford Bridge was to last for just a season; and I doubt if Jose Mourinho wants to stick with him another season. The club is also expected to do away with the services of Torres who was signed from Liverpool for £50 Million.
Chelsea’s main problem is in the final third, and this problem has persisted for a very long time this season. A player like Costa is one of those top class finishers in Europe who has the ability to burry half chances. The relationship between both clubs has been very cordial, which makes the deal look all the more likely.
Costa has netted 32 goals in all competitions this season for the current La Liga leaders, and could be the answer to Mourinho’s striking problems.
Should the report on El Confidencial be true; then we may have done ourselves a great favour as the player is one of the most wanted strikers in the whole of Europe.
