The reliable Italian media outlet, TMW has recently reported in the past few days that Chelsea are looking to close in on Paraguayan youngster Sergio Diaz. The Premier League Champions have been scouting the 18 year old forward this season, and a deal could happen as soon as the final whistle of the Sunderland match. Chelsea’s first summer signing will be Nathan, who has already been confirmed, and adding another South American will bolster the youth teams. Chelsea has also been scouting Argentine Jose Mauri. Chelsea has always been interested in signing South American youngsters, partly due to the success they have in London. Neymar had even admitted to playing as Chelsea in FIFA before his move to Barcelona.
The same report also includes a statement that Diaz’s father, has travelled to London to watch the Sunderland match at Stamford Bridge, and then to negotiate a deal for his son. His father is Diaz’s primary agent, and Chelsea wants to complete the deal very quickly.
Diaz has put on impressive performances in the Paraguayan top flight this season, scoring 9 goals in only 23 appearances for Cerro Porteno. On the Paraguay under 20 team, he has scored twice in 7 appearances, and he has grabbed another two goals on the under 17 team. As a result he has been linked to some of Europe’s biggest clubs, including Manchester United, Liverpool and AS Roma [Metro]. The biggest obstacle in Chelsea’s way in AS Roma, who are reported to do anything they can to bring Diaz to Italy.
Jose Mauri, Kenedy, Nathan and Diaz is quite the attack, and they will dominate the youth league. Hopefully they choose to play in the youth system instead of being loaned out. We see the success that Dom Solanke, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, and Kasey Palmer are having by staying in London, but Patrick Bamford, Marco van Ginkel, and Lucas Piazon are putting on impressive campaigns on loan.
Sergio Diaz could be the one to break through and make into Mourinho’s first team, something we rarely see as Chelsea fans. It will be interesting to see if Diaz is signed, what happens to Kenedy and Mauri.
