According to The Daily Mail Thibaut Courtois is set to renew his contract. The Belgian, whose contract expires in 2016, is now expected to sign a deal that will keep him in the club until the summer of 2018.
The 21 year old goalkeeper is seen by many at the club as the one to take over from current Chelsea number one, Petr Cech who has been with the club for ten seasons now. The paper reports that the Belgian international who is currently out on loan to Atletico Madrid of Spain will earn significant increase on his current weekly wages of £30,000.
This news will come as a relief to most of us since the player is one of the most highly rated goalkeepers in Europe, and is highly sought-after by a lot of clubs including Real Madrid, Atletico, and Barcelona.
Courtois, who is expected to be in goal when Chelsea file out against Atletico Madrid in the semi-final of this year’s Champions League, is also the number one goalkeeper of the Belgian national team. At 21, he is also rated among the best goalkeepers in Spain, and could even become the best in Europe by the time he returns and starts playing regularly for us.
Meanwhile, it would seem that the controversies surrounding the player’s eligibility to play against us in the Champions League have been put to bed with UEFA ruling that the agreement that would have hindered him from doing is invalid. The clause would have seen Chelsea earning £2.5 Million in every match the goalkeeper plays against us.
It is believed that Courtois will remain with Atletico Madrid for yet another season as the boss still maintains confidence in the ability of current number one, Petr Cech. According to The Daily Mail, Diego Simeone is interested in keeping the player on loan for another season.
If the deal to make him stay his agreed, then it will be the fourth consecutive season the 21 year old is staying with Atletico.
