If you believe reports in the Italian media and in the Guardian, then Chelsea has missed out on the chance to sign Real Madrid’s Sami Khedira on a free transfer as the high rated but injury prone German has reportedly agreed to sign for Juventus and will have his medical this week.
Sami Khedira was thought to be on his way to Stamford Bridge to reunite with his former boss Jose Mourinho but the media in Italy thinks otherwise. Khedira was linked to Chelsea in the winter transfer window after confirming he will not be accepting Real Madrid’s offer of a new contract which reportedly included a big pay cut.
The player was also linked to Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham and Manchester United. Should the report be true and he signs for Juventus, Chelsea will be missing a big chance of signing someone who would have been a worthy back up to Matic and is versatile enough to play the box to box role.
He would have bring his wealth of experience and winning mentality to bear on Chelsea’s players. However, it would be understandable if Mourinho is not considering signing him because he has other targets in stock because let’s face it, Khedira is ageing for a footballer and his injury record may surface again. However, Jose Mourinho needs to know Chelsea cannot afford to go into another season with Matic the only reliable defensive midfielder at the club.
