Chelsea have never been the best when it comes to nurturing young talents, helping them hone their raw potentials until they become established. They are instead known for going for top class, already made stars who can have huge and immediate impact on the team, with the youngsters given out to series of loan spells until they are too frustrated to stay, and end up leaving.
However, the Blues are learning. The past few months have seen a marked difference, a deviation from the norm at Stamford Bridge. Under former manager, Jose Mourinho, Chelsea began to blood new and fresh players into their squad and the first team. The Portuguese showed faith in the club’s young players by giving them the chance to impress. Kourt Zouma, Loftus-Cheek, and Kenedy are all beneficiaries of the latest turnaround.
And right now, reports are coming in that another Chelsea lad is impressing again. This time, it is John Swift who is on loan at Brentford. His loan spell was supposed to expire at the end of January, but it has now been extended until the end of the season. Swift joined the Championship side last summer and began to impress in from October. He has, in return, been rewarded with an extension and the chance to further warm his way into the heart of Hiddink.
Brentford manager, Dean Smith expressed his delight in having the midfielder extend his stay with the club.
“John has developed a lot as a player in his time with Brentford. He is someone I knew about when he was playing in League One last year and he has improved since then. He also has lots of scope to develop further. It is great to have him as part of the squad for the rest of the season”.
