Drogba and Essien compete for African Player-of-the-Year award
The Chelsea striker Didier Drogba has been named alongside midfielder Michael Essien in the top five players from Africa in 2009.
The other three are the ex-Barcelona star Samuel Eto’o, who scored in this years Champions League who plays for the club MFinal. His ex-team mate Yaya Toure has also been nominated, despite not being picked very often by his club this season.
The last candidate is Tresor Mputu Mabi, who is a 23-year-old Congolese player who plays for Mazembe in his home country.
Mabi is expected to be the next great striker to come out of Africa and has been described as the new Samuel Eto’o. He was named as the Most Valuable Player at the Championship of African Nations in March, as Congo beat Ghana 2-0 in the Final.

They are both losers to Etoo because Etoo won a treble this year scoring 36 goals and the most important goal that won the Champions league for Barca. He is Ranked 5th in the world and has scored 9 goals to lead Cameroon to the World cup. It is amazing that Etoo of all has never won BBC player of the year. Etoo should win both contest even though droba is in form since the start of this season he was a waste last football season scoring a pathetic 12 goals. In all competition Etoo has scored 52 goals this year to droba’s 31goals. Etoo should win without a doubt. for Essien he was injured and did not play that much so he is just a supporting cast.
