Fernando Torres scored for the second game running yesterday, but then got himself sent off for a rash challenge on Swansea’s Mark Gower.
Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas had no complaints over the decision, but he did not lay into Torres despite the fact that the Spanish striker will now miss three important league games.
Speaking after the game Villas-Boas said, “There’s nothing for Fernando to apologise for. It’s the referee’s decision. It was a good decision. It’s part of the nature of the game and the referee has decided on that. It’s a pity because the spectacle was promising. But even with 10 men, we never lost our will to continue to attack and I think it paid off. It was an important win for us based on the last defeat at Old Trafford and showing resilience in the end again after Wednesday. It really shows the nature and commitment of these players towards their objectives.”
Swansea boss Brendan Rodgers also had no complaints with Torres over the tackle and said, “I don’t think he’s a malicious player. It’s one where the ball’s just got away from Gower. He probably feels it’s there to be won and he’s trying to show his intention at the moment that he’s fighting for everything.”
It is good to see that Torres has got his appetite back for football, it is just a shame the suspension he will now receive has come at the wrong time for him, but he will be available for Wednesdays trip to Spain when Chelsea take on Valencia in the Champions League. The form he has shown in his last two games I wouldn’t bet against him scoring again on Wednesday. El Nino is back!
He’s fully back.
If the referee had given Torres a yellow card, would it have been wrong? The tackle was reckless and missed its target but not malicious. The “victim” did not even require attendance from the physio. However, Dean being the prick that he is, what better opportunity for vain glory and attention than to send off Torres. Truth be told, I have seen worse go unpunished or punished lightly. Well, it removes him from lime-light from a while and he can return better boosted.
