Chelsea supporters are in for a very interesting summer in a few months. With this season coming to a close, Chelsea is looking to lockup the Premier League title for the first time since 2010. A poor performance in the Champions League, have many wondering what Mourinho needs to do to elevate his squad to another level. One way, is to buy a handful of players to fill some missing holes in the team.
Expect Chelsea legend, Petr Čech to be on his way out of Stamford Bridge this summer. Sitting behind Thibaut Courtois for the majority of this season, Čech has grown unsettled with the lack of matches he has appeared in. Mourinho is not looking for another world-class keeper, but he is in the market for a quality backup, or two, to push his 22 year-old Belgian superstar in training. Suitable fits would be Brad Friedel, John Ruddy, Rob Green, Shay Given, or Craig Gordon would all provide Mourinho a good option off the bench.
With John Terry turning 35 next winter, Mourinho will be looking for a long-term replacement for the beloved Chelsea captain. Terry has been the best center-back in England this season, but next season could be different. With pacier strikers becoming the popular choice of top English clubs, Terry could fall victim to the likes of Danny Welbeck, Sergio Agüero, and Premier League target, Paulo Dybala. Chelsea has been linked to Aymeric Laporte, Mats Hummels, Nathaniel Clyne, and Marquinhos. Hummels would be the most expensive, and the most successful, with Marquinhos being a gamble, never playing in the Premier League and reportedly having work ethic issues.
With injuries plaguing the seasons of Didier Drogba, Diego Costa, and Loïc Rémy, Mourinho will be looking to add another striker to the squad for next season. Charlie Austin, Paulo Dybala, Mauro Icardi, and Douglas Costa all would fix the problem, and have been linked to a move to Stamford Bridge. The best and most reasonable option being Charlie Austin, who Chelsea could sign for less then £10million. Austin has scored 17 goals for Queens Park Rangers this year, being one of the most prolific strikers in England. Rumors have been circulating about Oscar’s future at Stamford Bridge, after the Brazilian’s form took a turn for the worse after Christmas. A move to Juventus has been discussed in the media, and he could be used in a deal for Frenchmen, Paul Pogba. Pogba will be one of the biggest stories this summer, with links to Chelsea, Barcelona, Real Madrid, PSG, Manchester United, and Manchester City. If Oscar was to leave this summer, Pogba would be a world-class replacement. Atlético Madrid’s Koke is another suitable no. 10 Chelsea could bring in this summer, and he would be millions cheaper than Pogba.
Nemanja Matić has been Chelsea’s most important player this season. He takes pressure off the back four, and the other midfielders in the lineup, taking all of the defensive responsibilities into his own hands. The few matches that he has missed, Chelsea have struggled. Ramires and John Obi Mikel are not suitable substitutes off the bench, and Mourinho should be looking to upgrade the position this summer. Chelsea should look to sign Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin, who has been having amazing performances all season. Schneiderlin could possibly even see substantial first team reps, but he would certainly elevate Chelsea’s squad to whole new level.
