Frank Lampard will appreciate the introduction of goal-line technology!

After endless debate in Fifa, UEFA, the FA and countless other football associations across 7 continents, it was decided that video refereeing would have to be implemented at some point. We Arsenal fans would relish the prospect of video refereeing but there is as a transition period from fully “human” refereeing to “computer” refereeing.

Naturally the FA wants to take it one step at a time, and the first step – goal-line technology – is one that is certain to please the vast majority of people who watch the Premier League. The proposed change is likely to take place at the start of the next season and personally I cannot wait to see the new system in action – a sentiment I am sure many people share with me.

It would be a change for the better. Just in the last 10 years, we have seen poor goal-line decisions made in even the most important matches. For the supporters of England’s national team, Lampard’s goal that was deemed “not over the line” against Germany will stand out in memory. Before that, Luis Garcia’s “ghost goal” against Chelsea in 2005 proved decisive and extremely costly for the Blues.

The decision has been a long time overdue. While there may be mixed opinions over the complete overhauling of the “human referee” system to more “video refereeing”, the change to goal-line technology is one that has barely any disadvantages. Incidents where the ball appears to cross the line are far and few between, but they are highly crucial and are more often than not game-changing. Analysis of video footage should take a very short time as well and theoretically should not disrupt the flow of the game

With nine different systems supposedly being tested by Fifa and the FA testing this technology until Christmas, hopefully we can see the technology used from the next season and stop the tradition of robbing teams of goals that they deserve!
