The ex-England legend Gary Linneker was pleased that Chelsea won the FA Cup, and mostly because his son backed them in a big accumalator!
Linneker wrote this morning: Most people were rooting for the underdogs of Portsmouth at Wembley yesterday, but I was delighted that Chelsea won the FA Cup again.
For all the foreign influence at Stamford Bridge over recent years, they are the one big club who have always respected the tradition and history of the competition and for that reason fully deserve the Double.
Even in the early rounds of the FA Cup, the big names from Chelsea are always on the teamsheet – and you can’t always say that about their biggest rivals
I ought to mention I wasn’t the only member of the Lineker household happy to see Chelsea triumph. My eldest son George put on a six-way accumulator at
the start of the season and four have now come in, with Chelsea following Manchester United (Carling Cup), Newcastle (Championship) and Rangers (SPL). If Barcelona clinch La Liga on Sunday and Spain win the World Cup, he’s due a very tidy win!
Chelsea’s third-round tie at Preston in January could have provided an excuse for some to take the day off. But not Frank Lampard, John Terry, Michael Ballack and Nicolas Anelka.
When Didier Drogba came back from the Africa Cup of Nations, he scored one and made two assists in the fifth round tie against Cardiff City. It just goes to show that playing in cup ties does not have to sap your energy. In fact, it could help your league form – as Chelsea have shown this season by winning both.
